VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) is a Cisco proprietary protocol that propagates VLAN on the whole local area network. VTP carries VLAN information to all the switches in a VTP domain. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol that builds a loop-free logical topology for Local Area Networks. The basic function of STP is to prevent bridge loops and the broadcast radiation that results from them. HSRP is a Cisco proprietary routing protocol that provides backup to a router in the event of failure. Using HSRP, several routers are connected to the same segment of an Ethernet, FDDI or token-ring network and work together to present the appearance of a single virtual router on the LAN. Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) provides for automatic assignment of available IP routers to participating hosts. This increases the availability and reliability of routing paths via automatic default gateway selections on an IP subnetwork. Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP) is a Cisco proprietary protocol which allows the load balancing of traffic among the master and standby routers.
